Sinuwave – A Non-Antibiotic Approach To Treating Chronic Sinusitis

Chronic sinusitis is a debilitating disease that affects more than 7 million people in the U.S. Typically, each episode of chronic sinusitis can last more than 12 weeks and occur 2-4 times annually.  Symptoms of chronic sinusitis include inflammation of the sinus tissue, build up of mucus and pus inside the sinus cavities, nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, throbbing facial pain, headaches, and swelling of the eyes and nose.

Inflammation and swelling of the sinus tissues, due to infections or allergies, can cause mucus to remain trapped in the sinus cavities.  This mucus buildup becomes a breeding ground for more bacteria to grow and produce virulence factors that further contribute to inflammation. In what seems to be a vicious circle of increasing bacterial growth and inflammation, a rapid approach to killing bugs and inactivating inflammatory markers is desperately needed.

The current standards of treating chronic sinusitis are not always effective. Although treatment with medications (saline nasal sprays, corticosteroids, antibiotics, decongestants and OTC pain relievers) are often successful, long-term use patients can develop side effects. It is estimated that up to 20% of chronic sinusitis patients treated with medication fail to respond, leaving hundreds of thousands of patients looking to surgery as an alternative treatment every year [1].

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is performed more than 500,000 times/year to help alleviate symptoms of chronic sinusitis. However, like with all surgeries, they are not always successful. It is estimated that 10%-20% of sinus surgery patients fail to respond with a favourable post-op outcome. When sinus surgery fails, there are hardly any alternative treatments, and patients are often forced to suffer from this debilitating disease for the rest of their lives.

That is the reason we have developed Sinuwave. an innovative, non-antibiotic treatment developed to address an unmet clinical need. Sinuwave is a photodisinfection-based approach to treating chronic sinusitis in patients that have failed both medical and surgical intervention. Unlike antibiotics, which require hours or days to exert their effect, photodisinfection works instantaneously, destroying microbes upon light activation. Photodisinfection therapy is well suited to the treatment of chronic sinusitis because of the technology’s proven immediate antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
